Cancer research center not without its critics

05:15 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 5, 2007

At MD Anderson Cancer Center, in the hospitality suite, cancer patient Costello Segura is not having a good day.

Still, he has reason to smile. “I was supposed to be dead two years ago.”

That’s when he and his wife of 47 years found out Costello had colon cancer.

This fall, the state legislature will ask voters for help to vote for Proposition 15. It is an initiative that would establish a Texas research center designed to find a cure for cancer.

Cycling champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong is one of the voices pushing the proposition forward. “The key here I think is to make sure people understand this is an investment and it is not an expense," he said.

Critics say they are pretty sure this proposition will pass overwhelmingly.

They say it would be pretty hard to mount a campaign that basically says "no" to finding a cure for cancer.

Still, they argue, the legislature is sinking billions into cancer research when a cure is not a sure thing.
