New hot car device to prevent baby deaths
05:27 PM CDT on Friday, August 10, 2007
More children die in hot cars in Texas than in any other state in the nation, but now there is technology that could turn those numbers around.
Patricia Zepeda has her hands full with five kids and a hot mini van on a scorching summer day.
“This is very rare; I go out with them alone,” Patricia Zepeda said.
She remembers when a trip home from the swimming pool ended unexpectedly for her daughter.
“I unloaded everybody and everybody was hungry. So I was giving everybody sandwiches and I’m like where’s the 3 year old? She was asleep so I didn’t get her out; she didn’t climb out. Somebody left the door open thank goodness,” Zepeda said.
Children under four are the most at risk of suffering serious injuries because of a heat stroke.
“It’s possible that a child could die within 15 minutes of being left in a car,” Dr. Richard Bradley from the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital said.
At 11 a.m. the temperature in a mini van measured in the mid eighties.
“I’ve turned the car off, the AC is off. We’ll see how quickly the temperature will go up,” Dr. Bradley said.
After waiting a little more than ten minutes to check the temperature in the back seat, it measured 112 degrees.
Cars now come with all kinds of alarms. They warn you if a door is open and if your seatbelt is unfastened, but there is no alarm to let a parent know if they’ve let precious cargo behind.
A device called baby alert is on sale in the internet which replaces the safety clip on a child’s car seat.
Another alarm is placed on your key ring. It goes off if a parent walks more than 10 feet away and the child is still in the safety seat.
“If I was driving with my kid, I’d have one,” Dr. Bradley said.
He assures he would own a baby alert device because he believes there is no safe amount of time to leave a child in car alone.
You can find these baby alert devices on the internet for about $65.
