Gambling rooms taking over Denver Harbor

It is almost like a revolving door with customers going in and going out.

Inside the building, residents tell us there is something else revolving or at least spinning.

“They are slot machines, gambling,” said Pastor Robert Martinez.

The minister of La Roca Church said the number of secret gambling businesses in Denver Harbor has skyrocketed in recent months.

In two blocks alone, he says there are at least three.

"It makes me feel very uncomfortable because of what its doing. It’s not good for the redevelopment of Denver Harbor," said Martinez.

Or good for keeping out potential crime.

Just last Saturday, a nearby illegal gambling business became a homicide scene in seconds.

A 40-year-old customer was accidentally shot and killed by the owner who meant to stop a would-be robber.

"I'm not saying all these people are bad,” said community activist Theresa Padilla. “It's an element that we shouldn't have in our community.”

She says the sight alone of kids playing a few feet away from illegal activity is reason enough to shut them down.

"Policemen have come here. That is why I do not understand. They come and close it down and a few days they're open again,” said Padilla.

Therefore, the game goes on as well as the fear.
