Condo residents face eviction
06:03 PM CDT on Monday, July 16, 2007
Some Houston residents will not be winning a fight to keep their homes after their condominiums were condemned by the fire marshal.
They are being kicked out of their homes in the 10400 block of Forum Park. And on a day washed out by thundershowers.
Owners and renters at a southwest Houston condominium complex watched their dreams wash away.
As 11 News first reported over the weekend, the Houston fire marshal condemned building No. 6 at the Windfield One Condominiums for failing to meet fire code.
Residents were given until today to move out.
Juan Chavez, of the city’s relocation team, came to offer assistance. But he encountered more frustration than anything else, from people who blame the management company for allowing the complex to fall into a state of disrepair.
And with condos fast on the rise in Houston, some city leaders are trying to prevent similar nightmares from taking place. So we talked to Councilman Peter Brown about a tough new ordinance he plans to introduce.
“We need to set tough standards of basic livability, so that management, owners and renters know what’s expected at these complexes from the get go,” said Brown.
It could make a difference for future investors and renters
But it’s too late for the people of Windfield One Condos.
