Emancipation Park turns 135
12:28 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 10, 2007
Crowds gathered to celebrate a birthday for a 135 year old Tuesday.
But it wasn’t for a person – it was for a park.
Emancipation Park, located on Dowling Street in southeast Houston, was purchased by freed slaves in 1872.
Now people use the park to celebrate Juneteenth, the day when Union soldiers showed up in Galveston to announce that all the slaves had been freed.
