City plans to spend $6M reconstructing a street some say doesn't need work
06:20 PM CDT on Thursday, July 5, 2007
There’s nothing fancy about York Street.
Drivers there have to stop for trains, but the pavement is in pretty good shape.
So why would City Hall want to spend $6 million reconstructing it?
Politicians usually love road projects in their districts – they fix up the streets and generally make voters happy.
But that’s not the case with the York Street plan.
“This particular project really stands on its own. In fact, it’s even going to potentially collide with the light rail project. And so I’d rather see this project delayed,” Councilman Adrian Garcia said.
In city governments, street projects are planned years in advance. Several years ago, some city bureaucrats decided that York Street would need reconstruction by now. As it turns out, their predictions were wrong.
And now the mayor has some explaining to do.
“If you look at the pace of development, it’s proceeding to the east from downtown, so it’s been in the works for a long time – certainly before I was mayor,” Mayor Bill White said.
So for now, the council has delayed voting on the project for two weeks – time enough, they hope, to decide what to do about York Street.
