04:56 PM CDT on Monday, July 2, 2007
A cold case became hot again when HPD homicide investigators identified a suspect in a fatal stabbing from 1982.
Carl Sterling Ward, 48, was charged Monday with murder for the death of Nelson Guevera, 25.
Police say Ward stabbed Guevera in the abdomen in the 4000 block of Cosby on December 9, 1982.
Guevera’s roommate found him dead on the floor of his apartment around 12:55 p.m.
Police arrived on the scene and began processing and collecting evidence.
Several witnesses were located and interviewed. They reported seeing several males leaving the apartment.
At the time, there were no suspects or leads in the case.
In 2006, trace evidence from the scene was entered into CODIS and a DNA match was located.
The profile match was identified as Carl Sterling Ward.
Ward is currently serving time at the McConnell Unit in Beeville on an unrelated murder charge.
