Details emerge in dragging death

12:33 PM CDT on Monday, July 2, 2007

By Carolyn Campbell / 11 News

Glen Smith has yet to hire an attorney.

A wrecker driver accused of dragging a Baytown woman to death was in court Monday morning.

Prosecutors said there was a passenger with Glen Smith he tried to take her car June 23.

The passenger told Smith he'd hit someone, prosecutors said, but when Smith kept driving, the passenger jumped out of the car.

Smith is charged with manslaughter in the death of Cathy Soileau, who was hanging onto her ex-husband's car when Smith towed it away.

Neighbors said Soileau was screaming in agony as she was pulled several yards behind the tow truck. Smith insists he had no idea someone was being dragged behind his wrecker.

An autopsy revealed that Soileau died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Police said her ex-husband gave her the car but later hired the wrecker driver to take it back.

Smith was already on probation for possession of a controlled substance. No bond was set Monday.
