Fire safety plan could save lives
06:48 PM CDT on Monday, June 18, 2007
A fire at an atrium-style office building left three people dead.
It happened on a hot day last March.
“The atrium buildings specifically are going to require some type of upgrade or improvements that we currently do not have in code. As a result, we’re going to need the manpower to make sure that we can look at that,” said Houston city councilmember Adrian Garcia.
Councilmember Garcia is proposing adding two new inspectors dedicated to checking out not just atrium-style structures but all of Houston’s mid-rise buildings.
They would help enforce stricter mid-rise fire codes that HFD officials hope to draw up later this year.
Union leaders say inspectors need all the help they can get.
“This union has been on record for numerous years asking for an increase in staffing levels of our inspection division, more inspectors to go inspect these buildings,” said Roland Chavez a firefighter union president.
Atrium-style office buildings are found throughout the city of Houston.
It became a popular architectural style in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Now the fire department counts 136 of these buildings in Houston.
Those are buildings that could face new scrutiny from new inspectors.
