Homeowners association under fire for 'ghetto' memo

11:00 PM CDT on Wednesday, June 6, 2007

By Vicente Arenas / 11 News

Residents tried to oust the homeowners association president over the 'ghetto' memo.

There is a great deal of tension between a homeowners association and the residents it is supposed to represent. The association’s president is under fire for a memo she mailed to 600 residents that some claim had racial overtones.

The contents of that letter and other complaints came to a head Wednesday night.

But even before the Blue Creek Ranch Homeowners Association meeting started there were fireworks. At one point 11 News was asked to leave, but refused arguing it was a public building and meeting.

Tensions began rising after the homeowners association sent out a letter saying their young neighborhood filled with $100,000 homes  was turning into a “ghetto.”

That term touched off accusations of racism. The homeowners association sees no problem with it.

11 News: You use the word ghetto in the letter that was sent out. Why say it’s being turned into a ghetto?

“We define that in the notice. We stand behind the notice. It is what it is,” said association president Tamika Harris.

In the letter Harris said front yard barbecues and loud parties among other things were destroying the quality of life in the subdivision near State Highway 249 and Beltway 8.

The residents say the association has been sending them these letters and fining them unfairly.

“You go outside and you talk to your neighbors in the garage and you’re just talking to your neighbors not doing anything she says your using the garage as a living space,” complained resident Lorraine Satterfield.

At Wednesday night’s meeting many residents were hoping to elect a new president, but failed. They were short three votes.

While things may seem normal in Blue Creek Ranch, tension continues to build between angry homeowners and their association, which says it only wants to keep the peace and quiet there.
