Apartment fire kills six parrots

12:42 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Six parrots die in apartment fire

Fire officials believe an electrical problem sparked a fire at an apartment complex Tuesday morning.

The blaze broke out at around 8 a.m. at a complex on Winkler at Meadowbrook.

A group of police officers happened to be nearby, saw the smoke and rushed over to help.

When Officer Time Haase heard a woman yelling for help, he rushed into the burning unit.

“She was creaming. She was speaking Spanish, and she was saying ‘my baby!’ One of the other officers said ‘no, she’s talking about a bird,’ so we backed out,” Haase said.

The woman had seven parrots in her apartment.  One made it out alive, but six others died.

Luckily, no people were hurt, and only one apartment was destroyed.
