Mayor Bill White will ask City Council on Wednesday for more money to synchronize traffic lights.

Since first ran for mayor, he has touted the idea as a way to speed up traffic, and now he wants to finish what he started.

Mayor White said he has completed about 70 percent of the city's traffic lights. He will ask for $300,000 to pay for the licensed computer software that will get the lights in sync for the remaining major intersections.

"If you catch one within those matter of seconds changing, then if you go ahead on and drive you can catch all the green at the same time," cab driver Gregory Marshall said.

Mayor White said when the lights were timed along Westheimer from the Loop to the Beltway, it increased motorists' speed by 16 percent.
