Improvements to Hermann Park would ease traffic, expand land
06:42 PM CDT on Monday, May 7, 2007
If you take a ride around Hermann Park, you’ll roll right next to heavy traffic – traffic that actually runs straight through the park.
Hermann Park is cut by South and North MacGregor, but the surrounding land is all a part of the park.
Now, in a bid to open up more land, the city plans to move one of those streets.
Moving North MacGregor would open up about ten acres of the park and simplify a complex intersection. The effect will be almost like putting more land in the park.
“That would be fantastic. We would love it. It’s a wonderful idea. Good use of tax money,” park user Jane Mitchell said.
The Hermann Park Golf Course sits right next to MacGregor Drive, and golfers admit that occasionally someone will slice a ball right into the traffic.
But if the street gets moved as planned, it will decrease the chance your car will get dinged by a golf ball as you drive down the street.
And ambulances rushing to the Texas Medical Center just might get there faster over a new planned bridge over Braes Bayou – a bridge that would also lead to more parkland.
“Suddenly, you’ll be able to access this part of the park really easily from the middle of the park,” Doreen Stoller with the Hermann Park Conservatory said.
The end result will be a whole new look for a drive around the park.
