Going wireless: City OKs contract for Internet system
12:10 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 11, 2007
A wireless Internet bubble over Houston is now one step closer to reality.
On Wednesday, Houston City Council approved a contract with EarthLink to build a wireless Internet access system over almost all of the city.
But unless you’re around certain city parks or libraries, logging on to the system won’t be free. It’s expected to cost customers around $22 a month.
EarthLink will pay the construction costs, but the city government has agreed to do at least $2.5 million of business over the network during the first five years of the deal.
The system will hit the airwaves on a zone-by-zone basis, but the entire wireless network should be finished within two years.
