Allergy season is in full bloom

06:00 PM CDT on Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Are your eyes itching? Your nose running?

It could be a cold, but the likely culprit this time of the year is allergies.

There’s no doubt: Spring has sprung. The sights and sounds are unmistakable.

Allergies are making Trelyn Henry miserable.

“They make me feel sick and not well,” Henry said.

The 7-year-old is battling everything from itchy eyes to congestion.

“He was scratching his skin until he started bleeding,” parent Ohura Henry said. “He just would not stop itching.”

Dr. Carla Davis said don't expect much relief from allergies anytime soon.

“I think it’s going to be a pretty bad season,” the Baylor physician said. “The pollen counts are very high -- they’re extremely right now -- so I think we’ll see a fair amount of allergy symptoms and sufferers this year.”

Tree and grass pollen are what most people are allergic to right now. It’s released into the air between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Staying indoors during those hours will help reduce symptoms.

If you live in the Houston area and don’t have allergies, just wait a while. Research shows most people here eventually develop a sensitivity to pollen mold or both.

“If you take you medicine correctly, your allergy symptoms can go away,” Dr. Davis said.

A month after he started taking a prescription antihistamine, henry is feeling much better, even though a killer allergy season is in full bloom.
