“We were always together loving each other it’s going to be the hardest part.”
Margaret Ortiz can’t begin to describe how big her loss is.
On Sunday, her mother Maria Ortiz and sister Vanessa, who was pregnant, died unexpectedly.
They were on their way to grandma’s house when a drunk driver slammed into their car killing them on impact.
Police say the suspect, 25-year-old Ignacio Gomez was behind the wheel of the car that hit the women.
They say he tried to escape and was caught after he was hit by an oncoming car.
Turns out, it wasn’t his first run in with the law.
Gomez, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, had been convicted on three previous DWIs in the last four years.
“This should’ve never happened if the system had been functioning properly,” said Andy Kahan with the Mayor’s Crime Victim’s Office.
He says the suspect should’ve been charged with a felony on his third offense.
But he was only charged for a misdemeanor and sentenced to one year in county jail.
“Our system rewarded him because they kicked him out every time to do what he does best,” said Kahan.
Margaret Ortiz agrees. “If he had been there five years this wouldn’t be happening. I just hope this time the law really does hit him hard.”
Vanessa and Maria Ortiz will be buried Thursday.
Funeral services are scheduled to be held at Earthman on 45 and Rankin.
