30 gay couples exchange vows, rings in Houston church
05:23 PM CST on Sunday, February 18, 2007
Same-sex marriage is illegal in Texas, but that didn’t stop more than 30 gay couples from celebrating their commitment Sunday.
The couples exchanged vows and rings at the Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church in the Heights.
About 20 clergy from Christian, Jewish and Unitarian faiths performed the ceremonies.
“I strongly feel in the Christian faith and the Christian faith community that we have got to stand on our word and God never judged us, it is people who judged us,” Pastor Pete Estrada said.
“Hopefully ceremonies like this will encourage others to join us in our fight for equal rights,” Robert Martinez said.
Organizers said they hope to oversee more ceremonies like this one in the future.
