Dog sends the U.S. Postal Service packing
11:14 AM CST on Sunday, December 17, 2006
A family pet frightened a mail carrier so badly that about 70 homes in southeast Houston may not get their packages in time for Christmas.
As of Friday, the mail carrier that delivers in the 6300 block of Belldart has not delivered any mail for fear of Mary Jane, a white pit bull that lives in one of the affected houses.
Resident Mike Boessling lives next door to the family that owns the dog.
“She became very panicky and that’s why she said no more mail service on this street,” Boessling said. “I’m not angry at the people. I’m not angry at the dog. But I would think they would show some responsibility in has happened and what is happening.”
Boessling says he now has to drive 15 minutes to the nearest post office to get his mail.
The U.S. Postal Service confirmed that no mail is currently being delivered to the street, noting their first priority is the safety of their postal carriers.
Postal officials believe the dog poses a threat.
“We are trying to relocate it, and we know it’s been an inconvenience for everybody in the neighborhood and we’re sorry for it,” Melissa Gonzalez, who lives in the home with the dog, said.

Mary Jane, a pit bull, scared a mail carrier so badly she refused to continue service to an entire street.
Gonzalez said her mother is just watching the dog.
But back in April, a different pit bull in the home bit a postal carrier.
The U.S. Postal Service said it is working with customers to get them their mail.
A spokesman said they will monitor the situation, and hopefully resume delivery at the earliest possible time.
Gonzalez said they just need more time to find someone to take Mary Jane off their hands.
“We don’t want that for the dog. She’s a sweet little dog. Even though she may not look like it. She’s a sweet dog,” she said.
A sweet dog with the power to stop the mail … indefinitely.
