The park is scheduled to open in early 2008, but for now there’s the issue of a name.

“Tapping the public to name the downtown park was a natural decision by the Conservancy,” said Nancy G. Kinder, Chair, Houston Downtown Park Conservancy. “The interest and excitement during our public input phase in 2005 was instrumental in helping us design a truly urban park that will be utilized by all Houstonians.”

Before you submit your idea, remember that the contest organizers want a name that reflects the park’s uniqueness and Houston’s flavor.

The contest is open to all U.S. residents. You have until 5 p.m. September 18 to submit an entry. The official name and winner will be unveiled at the park Groundbreaking Ceremony October 16.

The winner will receive a certificate for dinner for two at the new Schiller Del Grande restaurant in the park; a framed political cartoon by the Houston Chronicle’s Nick Anderson; and a collection of Houston Astros merchandise.

To get an entry form just head to any of the YMCAs listed below or by contacting the Houston Downtown Park Conservancy at (713) 238-8125.
