Four area men charged in auto loan scheme

Four Houston-area men have been convicted in a multi-count auto loan fraud scheme.
The U.S. Attorney General's Office said the scheme resulted in millions of dollar losses.
James Gilmore Butler and Joseph Fredrick Caccamo of Houston, Harold William Smalley of Beaumont, and John Leonard Hart of Friendswood are charged with conspiring to defraud federally insured drivers of $4.8 million.
Another man, Gary Michael Alfred of Vancouver, Wash., was charged.
A grand jury returned a 57-count indictment July 26.
All five defendants have been arrested.
Butler, Smalley and Hart, are each charged with conspiracy, nine counts of loan fraud, nine counts of bank fraud, 29 counts of wire fraud, and nine counts of money laundering. Butler has been released on a $100,000 bond. Smalley and Hart have each been released on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond.
Caccamo, who is charged with conspiracy, three counts of loan fraud, three counts of bank fraud, and 16 counts of wire fraud, has been ordered detained for a period of 30 days while he he's in a drug rehabilitation center.
According to the indictment, James Gilmore Butler, III, was the President of KWJB Holdings, Inc. doing business as Consumer Acceptance Group located in the 13700 block of Veterans Memorial Dr.
Harold Williams Smalley the co-owner and operator of Texas Automotive, Inc. doing business as Texan GMC/Buick located on Magnolia Street in Woodville.
John Leonard Hart owned and operated Texas Autosports, Inc., in the 1600 block of Brill Dr. in Friendswood.
Joseph Frederick Caccamo is identified as a salesperson at Let’s Roll Auto Sales located in the 8800 block of FM 1960.
Officials said the men allegedly submitted applications to get 262 fradulent loans for auto purchasers who were not creditworthy in Houston.
