02:49 PM CDT on Monday, June 12, 2006
A 15-year-old boy was brutally beaten with baseball bats and tire irons then stabbed to death in a Montrose park Tuesday afternoon. KHOU Witnesses say the attackers used bats, tire irons and golf clubs.
Police say he was killed during a gang fight at Chew Park in the 1700 block of Lexington.
Investigators say three members of a large street gang were hanging out at the park when a rival gang showed up.
"They were approached by other members of another, smaller street gang that congregates in this particular area," said HPD Sgt. Mark Newcomb. "These three Hispanic males were bascially ambushed from two sides of the park."
The group of 20 to 30 gang members attacked the three with bats and tire irons. Then a girl stabbed the 15-year-old to death before fleeing.
All of the other suspects also got away.
Homicide detectives were on the scene interviewing several witnesses to the attack.
They told police some of the suspects wore clothing indicating they went to Lamar High School.
Neighbors complain Chew Park has been the seen of trouble in the past.
