Police chase ends tragically
12:25 PM CST on Tuesday, November 8, 2005
A police chase ended tragically Monday night.
It wasn’t the end many had hoped and prayed for – Angie Brewer’s body
just feet from a truck, covered in a white sheet.
Family, friends and co-workers of the DPS drivers license clerk had
called police saying they were worried about her well-being and wanted
law enforcement to check on her.
KHOU-TV Police say the driver exited the truck to retrieve a gun that the passenger had thrown out the window.
Sources said the driver of the truck, Angie Brewer, had suffered from
bouts of depression and even talked about taking her own life.
But on the streets of Houston it was police officers who would do that,
only after watching Brewer run from them, causing a chase while holding
her sister hostage, police said.
After police blew out the truck's tire, Brewer ran around the vehicle
for a gun.
“That passenger grabbed a gun, which I believe is a 9 mm, and threw it
out of the passenger side,” said Capt. Dwayne Ready. ”At that time the
driver exited the vehicle, ran around, grabbed the gun off the ground
and was facing the passenger in the truck when our officers discharged
their weapons in the safety of the person that was inside the truck.”
Three officers fired at Brewer, and she died at the scene -- leaving
more questions than answers for investigators.
