A 19-year-old Hispanic male was shot by an HISD police officer.

Friday, the family joined LULAC officials in suggesting that race was a factor.

"Police officers that have that mentality that it's open season to kill Hispanics and other minorities in the streets of Houston and surrounding counties," said Johnny Mata of LULAC. "That mentality needs to end."

The HISD officer shot 19-year-old Roy Rodriguez while responding to an alarm at Lantrip Middle School. He says he thought the screwdriver Rodriguez pulled out of his pocket was a gun.

The Harris County District Attorney's office is investigating.
