Rice releases study on future of athletics

04:53 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 4, 2004

From 11 News Staff Reports

Rice University released a study today looking at the growing debate over whether the school should keep its commitment to athletics or cut programs to save money.

For years Rice University has prided itself as being the smallest school to compete in Division 1 athletics.

But the athletic budget is under scrutiny and several faculty members think Rice should compete at a lower level or not at all.

This spring, the Rice Board of Trustees commissioned a study and the details were released Tuesday.

After viewing the report, the trustees released the following statement: "...the Trustees have studied the report and many other materials, and have held lengthy discussions. The Board has made no decisions, but has narrowed the focus to specific concerns. The board wants to continue to play in Division 1."

The trustees are asking for public input before a final decision is made. They want to hear from alumni, faculty members and anyone else with a link to Rice.

Along with staying in Division 1, Rice would like to build a new basketball and volleyball facility, replacing Autry Court, which continues to age.

But as with all schools, money is tight. Rice is facing a $10 million deficit with its athletic program.

And while that seems like a lot of money, Rice Athletic Director Bobby May says his budget makes up only about three percent of the budget for the entire school.

The Rice Board of Trustees is expected to announce its decision in a couple of weeks.
