KHOU.com staff report

HOUSTON—Houston’s biggest back to school drive got under way in Houston Monday at HISD’s Tijerina Elementary located at 6501 Sherman.

This is the fourth year the YMCA has organized Operation Backpack.

You can get involved by dropping off school supplies at local YMCAS, churches and other community partners though August 17.

“Here at Tijerina Elementary we always try to help our families in any way we can to have a successful school year,” said HISD Tijerina Principal Paola Espitia Daniels.  “This initiative places our students, and other Houston children, on the right track to begin the school year.”

Last year, YMCA’s Operation Backpack collected more than 11,800 backpacks and 152,000 school supplies that helped prepare more than 25,000 children for their first day of school.  This year’s goal is to double those donations, and touch the lives of more than 50,000 children.
