Spike in drunk driving-related crashes in Harris County in past week

There have been five deaths related to drunk driving in the past five days in Harris County, investigators say.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Drunk driving can cause an accident at any time on any road in Harris County.

And when it does, Alison Baimbridge or one of the prosecutors on her eight-member team are often there. Baimbridge leads the Harris County District Attorney’s Vehicular Crimes Division.

She said she approaches her job one accident at a time.

“You have to because there are victims that depend on you,” said Baimbridge.

Over the last several days, that list of victims grew dramatically. On Sunday, there was a fatal head-on collision on West Mount Houston Road. One of the vehicles was allegedly driven by a drunk driver.

And a young mother was critically wounded Monday night by a suspected drunk driver in an accident on South Post Oak Road.

In all, there have been five deaths investigators have related to drunk driving in just seven days.

“We see defendants from all walks of life. With criminal history. Without criminal history. White, black, Hispanic, Asian, male, female,” Baimbridge said.

The defendants include Andrea Crabtree, an actress charged with vehicular assault. Another person charged with vehicular assault is Elvia Coronado. She works as a probation officer.

The rash of accidents comes almost three years after the district attorney’s office initiated a no-refusal policy forcing suspected drunk drivers to submit to a breathalyzer or blood test.

“So everybody’s doing what they can to help those people make choices the right way,” said Baimbridge. “Sometimes they just make them too late.”

She believes that because people keep dying.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Baimbridge. “They tell you it takes a village to raise a family. Well, our county has got to be a village to change the thought process of a few.”
