HOUSTON – You may have seen flames shooting into the air at the Lyondellbasell Houston Refinery overnight.
According to the Houston Fire Department, the refinery, located at Lawndale and Allen Genoa, had gone through a major system wide power failure.
That kicked in all the safety mechanisms to prevent any kind of explosions, including the massive release and burn off of the backed up fumes from the gas in the plant system. The burn off displays very large fire flames at the top of several smoke stacks and can be seen for miles.
This all started at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.
There were loud noises from systems shutting off and back-up safety systems turning on, which is what neighbors heard and thought were explosions.
It is very dangerous for a chemical plant to have a system-wide power failure, but nothing happened from the power failure.
No injuries were reported.
They were able to restore power after two hours.
