Olson's campaign comes out swinging after Democrat-backed attack ad

04:49 PM CDT on Friday, October 24, 2008

By Leigh Frillici / 11 News

HOUSTON—After Democrats aired an attack ad accusing Republican Senate hopeful Pete Olson of voting in two states back in 2003, Olson’s campaign came out swinging.

“This claim is completely false. I did not do that,” Olson said.

The ad claims Olson is under investigation for voter fraud in Virginia for voting both there and in Connecticut.

“I never voted in person in Connecticut. I never owned property in Connecticut. I never lived in Connecticut,” Olson said.

His team presented documentary evidence, showing two e-mails Olson sent from D.C. the same day he was supposed to have voted in Connecticut.

They also showed a plane ticket from D.C. to Texas for Olson scheduled for that same day.

Olson said he used his parents’ Connecticut address when he was in the Navy.

11 News spoke with Connecticut election officials, and they said there are a number of things that could have happened:

a) Pete Olson could have voted in Connecticut.

b) Election workers may have checked off Pete Olson’s name when they meant to check off a Paul G. Olson.

Whatever actually happened, one thing is for certain: the ad got plenty of attention.

The parting shot shows Olson’s face next to Tom DeLay’s mug shot – a sign of how tough this campaign has become.
