Wind is power. Now a man who made millions from it is trying to capture power of a different kind.
It is easy to miss Michael Skelly in his campaign office as he sits amongst the staffers.
“When I first got into this race, people said you're who? You're doing what? Now they're saying they hey I know you I heard you might win,” said Skelly.
Skelly is challenging Republican incumbent John Culberson for the District 7 congressional seat.
What would usually be a not so noticeable challenge is now a campaign garnering attention.
That may be because Skelly and his staff have raised nearly $800,000 during the first three months of the year.
It’s reportedly the most any congressional challenger has raised in the country.
“I've had a great response from Democrats, independents and Republicans,” said Skelly.
And lots of out of state donors. And that’s something Congressman Culberson criticizes
“Donations that I have received, nearly $600,000 demonstrates that I've got broad based support,” said Culberson. “Over 88 percent of my donors live in District 7.”
Culberson has done his share of block walking throughout the years meeting those voters. He says that outweighs dollars
“I'm used to being outspent,” he said. “I was outspent in my first campaign when I ran for the state legislature.”
Skelly won't say how much he'd sink into his campaign.
“I need to do my part to move this campaign forward,” said Skelly.
11 News: You mean millions? Hundreds of thousands of dollars?
Skelly: “I will put in the resources required to move forward.”
But Culberson said he is ready.
“I expect to be outspent 4-to-5. Who knows? He can outspend me 10 times, but they don't count dollar bills on election night,” said Culberson.
