FREEPORT, Texas -- A person of interest, 27-year-old Antoine Allen Gorman, is being questioned by police in the death of a 7-week old boy.
Gorman was arrested on Friday on Child Endangerment warrants. He was booked into Freeport City Jail Friday evening. Gorman remained silent while handcuffed.
The Freeport Police Department said Gorman was babysitting the infant at the time. Paramedics said the baby, named Malachi Nelson, was injured and later died at the hospital.
Police were called to the Villa Brazos apartments around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday about the two-month-old not breathing.
Police say Gorman, who is the boyfriend of the child's mother, was also watching two other children at the time.
Police also say Gorman goes by the name Luther Antoine Jefferson. There were three warrants out for his arrest on three counts of Abandoning or Endangering a Child.
Early Wednesday morning police released several photos of Gorman from Facebook in hopes that someone would know his whereabouts.
Police say additional charges are likely after an autopsy is carried out on the deceased infant.
The three current warrants each have a $250,000 bond.
The infant's mother, Tashiay Nelson spoke to KHOU 11 News on Friday. "He was a happy little baby." she said through tears. "He was handsome and everything."
"I couldn't sleep or eat. I can't do it without my kids." she added.
She was Gorman’s girlfriend for the last two months. They shared an apartment in Freeport until Tuesday.
“I didn’t know that was my last day seeing my baby,” she said.
Nelson went to work that morning and Gorman stayed home to watch her three children. The oldest child is four years old.
However, Gorman left without explanation. He is the last person to see Malachi breathing, Nelson said. She came home and found the 7-week-old boy unconscious.
“He was in a bouncer,” Nelson said. “So, I thought he was asleep. I went to my sister’s house and I was trying to wake him up to play with him. He wouldn’t wake up or nothing.”
Three days later, Freeport Police detectives with help from Houston Police tracked Gorman down in Houston’s South Park neighborhood. Sources said Gorman was cutting his hair when he was arrested.
He surrendered willingly.
Gorman faces charges for Child Endangerment in addition to being a person of interest in Malachi's death.
Meanwhile, Tashiay did not mince words when asked what she wants to happen next.
“I’m just glad he got caught,” she said. “But, I wish he would have got caught dead for having my child suffer.”
