HOUSTON – Just in time for the busy holiday travel season, Hobby Airport is opening up a badly needed parking garage.
Airport officials here at Houston Hobby predict that 35,000 people will be departing from this airport between Tuesday and Wednesday. They are hoping this brand new parking garage will be open by then to ease the parking crunch here.
Officials are waiting on the final green light on the inspection of the first phase of this brand new garage here. It will offer more than 900 brand new spaces.
The final project is expected to be completed in the spring, and once it's done, it will offer about 3,000 new spaces in total.
Add that the existing garage on site and that will make for 6,000 parking spaces at Hobby. About $55 million went into building the new garage, and it's been under construction for more than a year.
There's a number of high tech features in the garage, including an automated parking guidance system that shows open spaces using overhead LED indicators.
This was built to address unprecedented growth here at Houston, and with the recent opening of the new international terminal, more passengers are coming through here than ever.
"Obviously, if you've got that many people coming to travel that puts a little more of a crunch on your parking space," Bill Begley, Houston Airport System spokesman, said.
The garage is directly connected to the southwest ticketing lobby by a climate controlled pedestrian bridge, which would come in pretty handy on a cold morning like Monday's.
