HOUSTON—A Houston narcotics officer was lucky to be alive Friday after being struck in the chest during a shootout with a group of suspects. Authorities said the officer’s bulletproof vest spared his life.
It happened Thursday around 9 p.m. at a home in the 4400 block of Farrel Street in north Houston.
Police said a team of narcotics officers were attempting to serve a warrant when they were met by gunfire. The officers tried to duck, but one of them was struck in the chest. The bullet bounced off of his body armor.
The other officers returned fire and eventually brought six suspects from the house into custody.
The wounded officer was treated at the scene.
“It appears that his vest prevented him from getting seriously injured and he’s going to be fine,” said HPD Spokesperson Victor Senties.
Investigators are still trying to determine who in the house opened fire. The suspects will likely face a host of charges, including attempted murder.
