MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Police side with owner of killer pit bulls
11:12 AM CDT on Thursday, July 5, 2007
A couple in Montgomery County is describing a horrific scene at their house near Splendora.
What happened in Thelma Simon's backyard almost defies description. Her husband Floyd, a triple amputee, had let their 10-year-old Boston terrier outside to relieve herself.
Floyd: "I looked out this glass door and I seen two pit bulls had my little dog."
Thelma: "He crawled out of the house on his knees and down the steps and raced over here."
Floyd: "They got her head sucked through that gate and literally tore her head off."
Thelma: "He tried hard to save her."
For the Simons -- especially Mr. Simon who's pretty much housebound -- this was much more than just another family pet.
"When I go to work, she would lay beside him and be with him when I was at work," said Thelma.

Floyd Simon was cited by police after threatening the pit bulls that killed his dog.
The Simons say at least one of the pit bulls belongs to a neighbor.
Things went from bad to worse when the authorities showed up.
"I got mad. He got mad. Cop got mad," said Floyd. "He called some more cops and we all got mad."
And Mr. Simon made a threat.

"I told him I would kill his dogs if they ever came back on my property," he said.
For that, Floyd Simon was issued a citation for disorderly conduct and assault by threat.
When we went to the neighbor's house, he told us to leave or he'd call police. When we went to the police, no one was willing to talk. One person who has plenty to say: Thelma Simon.
"I wonder where the justice is today," she asked. "That they get to have killer animals who run free."
And she fears one day, it may be a family member instead of a beloved family dog for whom she mourns.
