Mom upset over breastfeeding incident at restaurant

A local mom is upset after a waitress placed a napkin over her as she tried to breastfeed her baby in a restaurant.

KATY, Texas - A local mom is upset after she claims she was disrespected at a sushi restaurant. 

Dylan Downing and her 2-month-old baby Mason were at lunch at Atami Steak and Sushi Bar on Tuesday when baby Mason started to cry. 

"I needed to nurse, he needed to eat, and I just fed him," said Downing. 

Her server walked right over but what happened next, Downing says, caught her off guard. 

"She got a cloth napkin and placed it over me and my infant," said Downing. "I ripped it off and said why are you touching me and covering my child."

Her waitress, Rattana, told KHOU 11 News three male customers at a nearby table were complaining too much breast was exposed. 

"I cover her like this," Rattana said. "She got mad. Right away I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I should have asked her first.'"

Downing says it should have never happened. 

"It's just a boob, that's what they're created for," said Downing. 

So frustrated with the experience, she refused to tip the waitress and snapped a picture of her receipt. That photo has started a conversation about breastfeeding. 

"It's legal in Texas, I don't understand what the big deal is," said Downing. 

Breastfeeding she says is not only legal, but normal. 

"It's just a boob," said Downing. "Look away. You can see them for free on the Internet. I'm just feeding my kid."

At the restaurant, Rattana says she just wanted to help. 

"First of all I want to say sorry to her," she said. "I don't mind if she feed the baby. I just tried to help to cover."

Downing hopes what happened to her raises awareness and helps other moms to know feeding their child in public isn't something to be ashamed about.

"Do you want to hear my child scream or do you want to see two seconds of boob?" asked Downing. "How would you like to eat with a cover over your head?"

Downing says she has no hard feelings towards the waitress or the restaurant and does plan to return as a regular customer.
