BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — The body of a boater reported missing overnight was found Monday by game wardens in Chocolate Bay in Brazoria County.

According to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, Carlos Alanis, 28, went missing around 6:15 p.m. Sunday in Chocolate Bay.

Alanis was out with two other boaters when their boat ran out of gas, deputies said. Alanis jumped out of the boat without a life jacket and tried to push the craft to shore before a thunderstorm hit.

Initially the water was shallow enough for Alanis to push to the boat, but then he stepped off into deeper water, deputies said.

One of the other people in the boat jumped in to try and rescue Alanis, but was unsuccessful, deputies said. They then called 911.

A search area was set up, but the search was halted once the sun set.

Late Monday morning, a family member informed KHOU 11 News the boater’s body was found.
