HOUSTON—A man came home to find his roommate shot and covered in blood Tuesday night and police were searching for the killers.

Adriano Diaz, 28, was shot after surprising burglars.

“He was a pretty quiet guy, a hardworking guy,” said neighbor Magdiel Bautista. “It’s really sad this happened to him.

Officers with the Houston Police Department said they were called to the 5800 block of Mackinaw Street around 9:45 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene told police they saw two men enter the victim’s home through an open door in the garage. Minutes later, they ran from the home and sped away in a white vehicle.

Neighbors contacted the victim’s roommate, who returned home and found Diaz. He was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

According to friends, Diaz worked as a garage door repairman. He didn’t seem to have any enemies.

James Holliday said he and Diaz had been friends since graduating from Bellaire High School 15 years ago.

"It's gonna break my daughter's heart," Holliday said. "They called him uncle."

HPD homicide detectives called the crime a robbery, but it wasn’t immediately clear what was taken from the home.

Anyone with information can call HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600.
