HOUSTON—A former Aldine Independent School District bus driver who struck and killed a student last April is facing criminal charges, even though she maintains it was a terrible accident.

“I feel awful about what happened and cry about it every night,” said Nelly Comier, a 64-year-old grandmother who’s driven a school bus for more than 30 years.

On Tuesday, a Harris County grand jury indicted Comier on a charge of Negligent Homicide. Comier was behind the wheel on April 29th when the fatal accident occurred. Authorities say 15-year-old Alma Meza had just stepped off the bus and crossed in front of it, when she was struck and run over. Comier has always maintained that she didn’t see the girl until it was too late.
Comier posted a $30,000 bond and expressed condolences to the victim’s loved ones.
“I would never deliberately hurt a child. I have children myself.”
A local activist believes the negligent homicide charge is excessive.
“We want to make sure the right thing is done because they can’t hurt this woman any more than she has already hurt herself,” said Quanell X.
