A man pulls out a gun trying to rob a jewelry store, and a woman fights back. Surveillance video shows how she was able to hold him off.
It happened around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at Houston Jewelry on Westheimer near Gessner.
"The guy came up to the door and shoves it this way, and I take my hands and push him back, and he fires the gun three times... pop, pop, pop," said Judy Memmel, who fought off the gunman.
She's worked at Houston Jewelry for 20 years, and she's a grandma.
"Some women panic, scream, yell, I don't do that... I get mad," she said.
Surveillance video shows the guy waiting around the corner before employees arrived. He was wearing a coat and tie, covering his eyes with sunglasses. Then just as the three employees make it inside, the man pushes the door open, Memmel pushes back, and he starts shooting.
"What she did was extremely lucky," said Kathye Parker, another employee. "It was, of course, protecting the store, but at the same time, we could have had a lot worse ending than we did."
The shots grazed a jewelry case and the ceiling, but no one was hurt.
"Then he almost turned and tried to shoot Jesse," Memmel said.
The man got away without taking anything from the store. In the surveillance video, you can see a second guy waiting for him in a car with paper plates out front.
None of it rattled Memmel. She was back on the floor selling jewelry and says she wants what happened to her to be a warning for all women.
"I think it just depends on the circumstances, you can't make a general rule, just keep your eyes open," she said.
We called Houston Police. Investigators are still looking for these two suspects. If you have any information, call police.
