HOUSTON - A police officer shot and killed an alleged robbery suspect during a sting operation, according to HPD.
The Houston Police Department says that the officer-involved shooting happened Wednesday morning. HPD held a press conference Wednesday afternoon and new Police Chief Acevedo said that the shooting was part of a sting operation following an investigation into a series of armored car robberies.
At 10:55 a.m., HPD says three suspects arrived at an Amegy Bank. HPD had a bait armored car in place. Police say one suspect was nearby with a long rifle and believe he was a sniper planning to take out the armored car driver. That suspect was shot and killed by police.
The two other suspects were taken into custody. A nearby school was also briefly on lockdown. The officer is OK.
"If a life is going to be taken, I'm just grateful it's the life of someone that is going to kill one of my cops or two of my cops. When you shoot at the police, you can be assured you are going to be shot at back," said Avecedo.
