HPD: Suspect shot, killed during traffic stop on Beltway 8

A man was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Beltway 8 Thursday. The suspect tried to flee the scene, officers said. The officer conducting the traffic stop clung on to the vehicle as the driver took off.

HOUSTON - A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in southwest Houston Thursday afternoon.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. on Beltway 8 near Bellaire boulevard.

Houston police said Officer R. Felix pulled over the man after discovering the vehicle registered for multiple toll road violations.

While discussing the violations with the driver, the officer learned the man did not have a license or insurance.

The officer said the man continued to reach around for something on the floor of the vehicle during their conversation.

The officer apparently asked the suspect to stop and when he didn't, the officer opened the driver's side door of the vehicle.

At this time, the suspect started the engine of the vehicle. When the suspect accelerated, the deputy jumped onto the sill of the vehicle door and hung on for about 120 feet.

The officer's head was above the vehicle and he said he felt the suspect reaching for his gun, which was drawn at the time.

The officer then discharged his weapon twice, hitting and killing the suspect, according to police.

Police said the suspect did not listen to verbal commands given by the officer during the incident.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

Felix suffered bruises but is expected to be OK, according to police.

He has been an officer with Precinct 5 since October 2004.

The identity of the suspect has not been released at this time.

Police said they found a switch blade, a bandana and cash inside the vehicle.

Three different agencies are investigating at this time.
