ATV flips, kills northeast Houston man
07:20 AM CDT on Friday, June 20, 2008
HOUSTON -- A man was killed Thursday night after the ATV he and an 8-year-old boy were riding flipped over in northeast Houston.
Around 9:15 p.m., the 34-year-old man and the child were riding on a hike-and-bike trail in the 7100 block of Parker near Bretshire. The boy was on the back of the ATV.
Houston police are still investigating, but they said it appears some kind of water hose was stretched across the path, and the four-wheeler lost control when it ran into it.
The driver died at the scene, but the boy managed to escape serious injury. He flagged down passing vehicles to get help and was taken to LBJ Hospital.
Police are trying to figure out whether the hose was simply on the ground or if it was tied and suspended in the air.
"We would appreciate it if anybody has any information that could help us, if they could call the Accident Division at (713) 247-4072," HPD Sgt. David Runyan said.
Police said the two riders were friends.
"It was the little boy's first ride on the back of this ATV," Sgt. Runyan said.
