Residents sleep outside to promote cause

HOUSTON -- The season's first big chill sent shivers throughout Southeast Texas – especially on the banks of Buffalo Bayou.
"We get to go home to warm houses tomorrow, so this is good," said Melinda Hashaw, Houston resident.
Melinda Hashaw was one of several hundred people who camped out in Sesquicentennial Park on Saturday night to raise money and awareness for Houston's homeless. She is part of a non-profit group called SEARCH.
"It's a good cause. We figured we'd try to make sure everybody stayed warm," said Mike Beaudoin, Houston resident.
For those who took part in the event, sleeping outside was a way to experience first-hand what it was like to not have a home on one of the coldest nights of the season. The people who participated were determined to brave the cold and get the word out.
"Part of the homeless plight is that they are usually ignored. This brings the problem to the forefront. Maybe it'll make a difference," said Mike Marks, Houston resident.
So far, the non-profit group, SEARCH, has raised more than $50,000.
