HOUSTON – The economy may be slowing down, but at Midtown Auto Service, business is picking up.
"Everybody needs their car fixed especially when the economy is slow," said David Highnote from Midtown Auto Service. "People don't go out and buy cars with the credit crunch. They may not get approved for credit, so they have to fix their old car."
With his skills in demand, Highnote’s job is secure. But the same can't be said for the 240,000 Americans who lost their jobs last month.
At the Houston Community College, student enrollment is up as the economy continues to decline. Students are hoping the training they receive will lead them to recession-proof jobs.
In Houston, the latest job numbers revealed that the most growth is occurring in natural resources and mining. This includes the energy industry, which is up 7.9 percent.
Educational and Health Services growth has also increased. The industry is up by 3.2 percent. And the number of construction jobs rose 2.9 percent.
"Houston's economy is still booming because we have a lot of plants," said Stephanie Flores, student at Houston Community College.
It’s this demand that is packing classrooms now that the economy is tough.
