Man is left with a crooked foot after surgery
07:49 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 29, 2008
KINGWOOD, Texas -- It's not that often you hear a story like this one. It involves a man in a wheelchair named Roger Chancey.
According to him, a doctor left him with a crooked foot and nobody at the orthopedic group where he had it done will fix it.
Chancey said this all started one day when he slipped off a curb and broke his leg. He was rushed to Kingwood's Medical Center where he said doctors told him that he would need surgery.
From there, he was sent to the Fondren Orthopedic Group.
“When I woke up from the operation, everybody said that my foot was crooked,” said Chancey.
But he said when he complained about it, the administrators told him they weren’t going to do anything.
“They called my home and said they weren't going to pay for anything. They weren't going to fix it at all,” said Chancey.
He said the call came after several doctors with the Fondren Orthopedic Group had admitted fault.
11 News investigated his claims, but the Fondren Orthopedic Group would not comment on his surgery. They did say that they have provided excellent health care for more than 30 years. Indeed, Fondren has a reputation of being one of the best orthopedic groups in Houston.
Chancey is confident he could find a surgeon to fix his foot if he had the money. But with no insurance, he's stuck. He said the first surgery cost him more than $15,000.
“They broke it; they need to fix it. They need to make it right. That is just the right thing to do,” said Chancey.
Until then, Chancey is forced to get around in a wheelchair.
