Sheila Jackson Lee asks for FEMA extension after Ike
10:50 AM CDT on Tuesday, October 14, 2008
HOUSTON—Time is quickly running out for Hurricane Ike victims to register for disaster aid. But Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said she will fight for an extension on certain programs.
Jackson Lee made the announcement from the southeast Houston home of Sheryl Hayes Monday.
Hayes is a 72-year-old retired woman living on a fixed income. She can’t afford to fix her roof that was damaged from a falling tree.
But today, the Army Corps of Engineers put a blue roof on her home.
There are many more like Hayes who need an extension of disaster aid benefits to fully recover.
“We can not end the help in this community, we have to continue it. It is not the end for some people of the hurt of Hurricane Ike, it is the beginning; the sooner we can get them restored the sooner we can restore our city,” Jackson Lee said.
The deadline to register for the Blue Roof Program was today, but FEMA has extended it until October 23.
Blue tarps cover 11,000 roofs for 100 miles from Houston to Louisiana.
Jackson Lee is also asking that the application process for unemployment and food stamps be extended as well.
