Bill Heard closes car dealership; 650 locals unemployed

HOUSTON – The nation's largest Chevrolet dealer, Bill Heard, stopped selling cars Wednesday afternoon, which means bankruptcy may not be far behind. The company closed its dealership in Sugar Land and 11 others around the country.

The company said it tried to battle through high fuel prices, a high inventory of Trucks and SUVs, the recession and the current financial crisis, but failed.

But 11 News discovered there is more to the story than difficult economic times.

Just two weeks ago, GMAC pulled Bill Heard's ability to finance its inventory.

"It would not surprise me if there were shenanigan's going on. Ultimately I think that is going to be the root of this. GM did not just wake up one day and decide to pull financing on the number one Chevrolet dealer in the United States,” said Dan Parsons, Better Business Bureau.

Parsons said the Better Business Bureau is familar with Bill Heard. He has had a number of complaints regarding the dealership over the years.

"Boxes and filing cabinets full of complaints. Between Heard and Landmark as co-owned entities, it’s the largest file we have,” said Parsons.

Bill Heard has a history of unfair business practices to its customers. Over the years the company has been forced to pay fines in several states, and more legal actions were filed just last week in Georgia.

But it's the 650 local employees who will be hit hardest and will be forced to find new jobs in a time when employment is hard to come by.
