HOUSTON -- Eleven days after Hurricane Ike, many who are still without power are now relying on help from organizations like the Red Cross to make it through each day.

On Tuesday, the Red Cross parked its truck outside Park Shadow which is a senior citizen living facility. More than 100 elderly Houstonians live there. Many of them have special needs and are on fixed incomes.

“Everyone is tired and everyone is hot. They are just doing the best that they can do,” said Joei Hayes, manager of the facility.

Hayes said it had been chaos ever since the lights went out and the air conditioning stopped running.

“It’s been pretty bad. I have been here since it started. I have lights at home, but I can’t leave my lady. I just stay with her,” said Christine Sherman, home health care nurse.

The main problem in the facility is the heat. Plus, it’s so dark at night, many of the female residents are scared.

We need flashlights, ice, battery powered fans, and electricity,” said Hayes.

E.B Williams is one of the residents of the home.  He is 95-years-old and said the heat reminds him of tougher times years ago.

“Yeah, I would love to have that good old cool air condition, but since I don’t have it, I have to take the next best thing…good God's glory,” said Williams.

Volunteers from the City of Houston are bringing in meals for the residents in Park Shadow.

In the meantime, residents are doing what they can to stay cool until CenterPoint makes it to their home.
