Millions of skeeters take over Baytown
09:38 AM CDT on Friday, September 5, 2008
BAYTOWN, Texas -- You could call Baytown's North League Sluggers baseball team the mini-Sultans of Swat. These days, however, they are swatting more than just fastballs.
In the past few weeks, millions of blood-sucking mosquitoes have racked up frequent flyer miles in the city by the bay.
“(We're) saying that they can carry away an elephant,” said North League Sluggers player Jason Donaldson. “We'll be playing (and) dang, look at all the mosquitoes.”
Dusk and dawn are the worst times for those who dare venture outside.
“I don't remember them being this bad, I know they weren't this bad last year,” said Baytown resident Denise Donaldson.
On average, five to 10 mosquitoes will land on you every 60 seconds. The man in command of skeeter patrol in Baytown is doing what he can to kill the bloodsuckers.
“We're trying to knock out as many adult mosquitoes as we can,” said Mike Lester, who blames Mother Nature for the increased mosquito population. “We're getting back to (a) normal weather cycle. We are back in that cycle.”
Video shot by Lester's crews near the Baytown Nature Center shows a cloud of mosquitoes swarming. With the recent rains, the city experienced a hatch-out.
The video shows the "wigglers," or larvae, that quickly become adult mosquitoes.
The bites are likely not going away soon, as cooler weather may be the only thing to keep Baytown safe from the swarms of mosquitoes.
