Hazmat called to help with warehouse fire
09:20 AM CDT on Monday, July 28, 2008
HOUSTON – A warehouse fire turned potentially dangerous when hazardous materials were found inside.
The fire occurred around midnight in a large warehouse on Alder Drive. While extinguishing the blaze, the fire department noticed multiple hazardous materials inside the building.
“It appears this place does some kind of coating, possibly utilizing zinc. So as precaution, with the material safety list we had, we went in and called for Hazmat,” said HFD District Chief Brian Burgess.
Because the Houston Fire Department didn’t know what the materials were, what was burning, or how much was burning at the time of the fire, they were forced to pull everyone out of the building until Hazmat arrived.
“The fire has now been extinguished and we’re doing a ‘decon’ just as a precautionary,” said Burgess. “There were no injuries and there was no threat to the neighborhood.”
The fire is currently under investigation.
