HOUSTON -- Protesters marched in front of the Harris County Jail on Sunday afternoon, calling for change after an inmate died during a fight with a guard.

Last week, the Harris County Medical Examiner ruled Clarence Freeman's death a homicide. He died in January 2008 after a fight with a detention officer.

His common-law wife, Cherry Bradley, stood alongside community activist Quanell X on Sunday.

"Until this day, I haven't heard anything," she said.

On Quanell's other side was Kathy Blueford Daniels. The two women now share a bond: They both lost their loved ones.

"He called me and he said, 'you know what? I just saw a kid get shot,'" Bradley said.

That kid was Patrick Murphy, Daniels' son. The 20-year-old was killed outside of a northeast convenience store nearly two years ago.

Bradley said Freeman was working there that night. She said he was supposed to testify at Murphy's suspected killer's trial.

Daniels' family protested Sunday not because she is convinced there are problems inside the jail, but because she stands behind Freeman's family.

"He stepped up to the plate because no one else had,” Daniels said. “I don't know what the conditions are inside the jail. I didn't have to live through it."

Freeman's family said he didn't live through it either.

A spokesperson for the Harris County Sheriff's Department said they have launched and internal investigation to learn how Freeman died.

One detention officer has been reassigned.
